Black Lives Matter Tucson
In times of tremendous pain and turmoil, Black Lives Matter Tucson believes that “Black Joy” is a revolutionary act.
The lives of Black people cannot be taken for granted which is why we embrace our joy as we find it.
When Black Lives Matter Tucson brings the community together, it’s not enough to educate them, we must also celebrate the beauty, ingenuity, and power of Blackness. We do it in that moment.
No two events are alike. Each one reflects the many faces, evolving ideas, and beautiful contradictions of what it is to be Black in the desert. Each event speaks only to the bursting heart of that moment.
Established in 2014, Black Lives Matter Tucson began as a group of radical Black folx inspired and empowered to demand an end to the state sanctioned violence against our community.
We are a group who wanted to break free from the narrative being offered by those presented as Black Leaders, who incessantly proclaimed that “all lives matter”. That message functioned as a means to deny our collective lived truth: No lives can matter UNTIL Black lives matter.
We started demanding a movement that actually represented who we are; a movement that broke with the misogyny and homophobia of the past; a movement that centered on the voices that have so often been erased in the fight for Black liberation. We are led by the revolutionary belief that the future is unapologetically Black, femme facing, and queer as fuck.
